Vaux, Thomas, 2nd Baron Vaux Of Harrowden

(1510-1556)

   He succeeded his father to the barony of Vaux of Harrowden, Northamptonshire, at the age of 13. Vaux attended Cardinal Wolsey on his embassy to France in 1527 and accompanied the king to Calais and Boulogne in 1532. He was created a Knight of the Bath at the coronation of Anne Boleyn (1533) and was captain of the Isle of Jersey until 1536. He was buried at Harrowden. Vaux was at the courts of Henry VIII and Edward VI and emulated the poet Sir Thomas Wyatt the elder (see entry). George Puttenham (see entry) included some of Vaux's poems in Art of English Poesie (1589). Vaux's two bestknown poems, in Richard Tottel's Miscellany (1557), are "The Aged Lover Renounceth Love" and "The assault of Cupide upon the fort where the lovers hart lay wounded, and how he was taken." The Paradyse of Daynty Devises (1576) contains 13 poems signed by Vaux. Some of his poems: "A Louer Disdained, Complaineth," "Beyng Disdained, He Complainethtrie Before You Trust," "In Loue He Complainethbeyng," "In Sorrowe He Complainethno," "Of Sufferaunce Commeth Easebeyng," "Pleasure Without Some Paine."
